What is whiplash and what causes it?

Whiplash occurs when an external force causes the head to whip back and forth. Such rapid and forceful movement causes tears in the soft tissues of the neck. This can lead to:

  • Limited range of motion
  • Stiffness and tension
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue and sleeplessness
  • Dizziness
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Neck, shoulder, arm, and back pain
  • Blurry vision

Should I see a chiropractor for whiplash?

Even if you’ve seen emergency room personnel and your primary care physician, you should see a chiropractor. Chiropractors specialize in detecting and treating injuries and issues in the musculoskeletal system. This includes injuries that you might not yet know you have as the symptoms haven’t presented themselves yet. Additionally, chiropractors work to use the most natural, safe, and non-invasive methods possible to help you achieve optimal healing.

It hurts to move my neck. Won’t chiropractic adjustments make it hurt worse?

Chiropractic adjustments – when used too quickly and without care – could certainly be uncomfortable. This is why chiropractors do not immediately start with adjustments. Instead, chiropractic care for whiplash begins by addressing the tension and inflammation, restoring your range of motion. Only after this has been addressed will other techniques be utilized.

How quickly should I see a chiropractor?

As soon as possible after an accident – preferably within the first 72 hours. The earlier you seek treatment, the better. Not only will your chiropractor address the whiplash, but will also detect and address any other auto accident injury that you might not even feel yet.

How long will it take to heal with a chiropractor’s help?

There is no set time frame for healing from whiplash. For some, it takes a few weeks. For others, it can take months. The length of your treatment will depend on the severity of your injury and other factors.

This does not mean, however, that it will take months to begin feeling relief. Most sufferers begin to feel better within the first few treatments. It’s important, though, that you do not stop treatment until your recommended treatment course is complete to fully heal.
